Statement

I am profoundly honored to present myself as a candidate for the role of graduate student representative on the Latin American Studies Association (LASA) Executive Council. My academic journey has been enriched by a supportive network, a privilege I recognize and deeply appreciate. This awareness fuels my commitment to advocating for those who might lack such support, particularly in academia.

My experiences in advocacy roles have shaped my approach to representation. As a graduate student representative in UCI's Department of Criminology, Law & Society, I played a pivotal role in reforming the qualifying exams, which had disproportionately impacted students of color. This change is a testament to what we can achieve with dedicated effort. As co-chair of the LASA Student Section, I have gained a deep understanding of the challenges our peers face, especially the financial hurdles in participating in LASA's Annual Congress.

In my role on the LASA Executive Board, I am committed to advocating for the needs and support of graduate students, with a particular focus on dismantling barriers to participation. I plan to initiate programs that increase financial assistance and facilitate greater involvement in LASA events, ensuring a more inclusive and diverse representation. My vision includes creating and nurturing spaces that empower students from historically marginalized groups, allowing them to engage fully and comfortably as LASA members.

My connection to LASA's mission is personal and profound. I believe in the power of our collective effort to make academia a more equitable and inclusive space. I am eager to contribute to this change, and I am thankful for the opportunity to possibly serve the LASA community in this capacity.
